Crime/DetectiveMysteries & Thrillers

The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins

This classic mystery, originally published in 1868, revolves around a gigantic yellow diamond looted from an Indian temple and bequeathed to Rachel Verinder as a present for her 18th birthday. The diamond disappears the night of her birthday and hree characters in the novel provide first-person accounts of events as the mystery of its disappearance unfolds. I listened to the audiobook version of this book and thoroughly enjoyed the characterizations. Betteredge, the butler with his Robinson Crusoe obsession and “detective fever” provided comic relief…a wonderful surprise.
