Dear Jane

The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block L2

Block L2 is foundation pieced. Looking at an image of Jane’s quilt, it is difficult to determine the size of Block L2 in proportion to L1 and L3. It is one of the few blocks that is not centered.  It appears Jane brought the points of the on-point square to the edge of the block on two sides and added more background to the other two sides.  I chose not to follow her in this case and designed the center on-point square to the edge of the block on all four sides. And yes, other renditions I’ve seen added more background to all four sides. Which one is right? As far as I can tell, neither. I so wish I could study Jane’s quilt in person!

As a caution, make sure you have your outer triangles arranged correctly before you sew them to your inner square. Two of the triangles are mirror images of the other two. I assumed they were all the same when I started attaching, and ended up having to do some ripping.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
