The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block I11

Block I11 is foundation pieced. I briefly considered doing appliqué diamonds as indicated in the Dear Jane book. But as I studied Jane’s block, I determined the diamonds were actually pieced. I’m not a fan of reverse appliqué so I decided to give foundation piecing a shot. This required eight inset seams. However, they were surprisingly easy, which I had discovered with Block H4. Granted these diamonds were much smaller, but they really weren’t any harder. I think the end result looks more like Jane’s block than appliqué would.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
