Dear Jane

The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block H6

Block H6 is a combination of traditional piecing and appliqué (or curved piecing). I chose to go the appliqué route as I’ve learned I’m not good at curve piecing when the curves are this small. No matter how slow I go, I end up with puckers (grrr). So appliqué it was.

The first step is to appliqué the eight corner circles to the outer middle sections. The second appliqué step is to appliqué the cross to the background center. I’ve included extra templates if you prefer to appliqué quarter circles to the background center. I chose to appliqué the cross so that I was placing the darker fabric on the lighter rather than the other way around since I am doing fusible appliqué.

The last step is to join the patches together in typical nine-patch fashion.

Whichever way you choose to assemble this block, it’s pretty cool and definitely an unusual one when it’s done.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
