Dear Jane

The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block F12

Block F12’s wedge sections are frankly quite similar to Block F11. And yet, a few minor changes and you get a totally different look. More Jane awesomeness. 🙂

The first step is to foundation piece the wedge sections. To prepare the wedge units, I took the 3½” squares, folded them in half and made a diagonal cut to form triangle pieces before foundation piecing. Then it was a matter of placing right sides together, line up the seams and sew to the foundation paper. Next I joined the foundation sections together.

The final step was to add the outer triangles via inset seams. For those who struggle mightily with inset seams or just need a break from them, I have included an alternate template to complete this block. By dividing the into traditional quarters, those pesky insets are eliminated. It will have a few more seams than Jane’s but the overall look will be close. I did not provide fabric cutting instructions for that template but you should be able to more or less cut the published measurements in half for those split pieces…double check me on this one so you don’t waste fabric.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
