Dear Jane

The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block D2

When I set out to design this template, I knew it was going to involve inset seams. At first, I thought I’d try to eliminate them by making the four center sections into mini snowball blocks. But I decided it just wouldn’t look as good with all those tiny triangles in the center. Plus I was trying to mimic Jane’s block and she clearly has a square in the center.

So, I opted for reverse appliqué for the center square patch and inset seaming for the small triangle patches. My center square patch isn’t perfect as this is my first time using reverse appliqué , but I’m pleased overall with the look of the block.  Given how much I struggled with inset seams on Block A13, I was  quite surprised at how much easier it was to inset those triangles this time around. Watching this video helped: Sew Easy: Inset Seams.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
